Make It Last: The Complete Jewellery Care Guide

19 July 2026·7 min read

The difference between jewellery that lasts a season and jewellery that lasts years is rarely the price tag. It's habits — five small ones. Here's the full guide, material by material.

The golden rule: last on, first off.

Jewellery goes on after perfume, lotion, hairspray, and makeup — and comes off before washing, sleeping, and workouts. This one habit alone doubles the life of any piece you own.

Know the Enemies

Almost all jewellery damage comes from the same short list:

  • Water — especially soapy and salty. Showers, dishes, swimming. Water is the main killer of plated finishes and the accelerant of tarnish on silver and copper. Take rings off before wuzu and washing up — frequent soap-and-water cycles wear plating faster than anything else.

  • Perfume, hairspray & lotion. Alcohols and chemicals in sprays eat plating and dull stones. Spray first, wait a minute, then wear.

  • Sweat. Salty and mildly acidic. After a hot day or a workout, give pieces a quick wipe with a dry cloth before putting them away.

  • Humidity. Pakistan's monsoon months are hard on jewellery left out in the open — moisture in the air alone will tarnish silver and patina copper. Storage matters most in July and August.

  • Chlorine & cleaning products. Pool water and household cleaners are the harshest of all — they can permanently discolour even quality pieces. Gloves on, rings off.

Store It Like a Jeweller

  1. Airtight beats open air. A small ziplock bag or airtight pouch per piece is the single best storage upgrade — it blocks the humid air that causes tarnish. Squeeze the air out before sealing.
  2. One piece per pouch. Metals scratch each other and chains tangle. Separation is protection — the pouch your Store Bumble order arrived in is made for exactly this.
  3. Add a silica gel sachet. Those little “do not eat” packets from shoe boxes? Free humidity absorbers. Drop one in your jewellery box — especially through monsoon season.
  4. Not in the bathroom. The steamiest room in the house is the worst place for a jewellery stand. A cool, dry drawer wins.
  5. Chains: clasped and hung, or laid flat. Fasten the clasp before storing so the chain can't knot around itself.

Cleaning, Material by Material

Not sure what a piece is made of? Every Store Bumble product page states its material — and our materials guide explains what each one means.

Gold-Plated

Wipe gently with a dry, soft cloth after wearing — that's it. For marks, a barely-damp cloth, then dry immediately.

Never rub hard, never use silver dip, polishing cloths with cleaning agents, or any chemical — you'll thin the gold layer itself.

925 Sterling Silver

A silver polishing cloth brings back full shine in seconds. For crevices, warm water + a drop of mild soap + a soft toothbrush, rinse, dry completely.

Never use toothpaste or baking soda 'hacks' — they're abrasive and leave micro-scratches that dull the surface permanently.

Stainless Steel

The easy one: warm water, mild soap, soft cloth, dry. Steel forgives almost everything.

Avoid chlorine (pools) and harsh scouring pads — the two things that can still mark it.

Copper & Brass

Buff with a dry cloth for daily care. To lift heavy patina: a paste of lemon juice + salt, rub softly, rinse, dry thoroughly — the glow returns instantly.

Never store damp. Moisture is what accelerates the green patina — dryness is 90% of copper care.

The Never-Do List

Internet “hacks” ruin more jewellery than daily wear ever does. Whatever you read elsewhere:

  • No toothpaste. It's sandpaper in a tube — permanent micro-scratches on every material.

  • No boiling water. Heat shock can loosen stones and stress solder joints.

  • No bleach or acetone. Instant, irreversible discolouration on plated pieces.

  • No sleeping in chains. Overnight friction + sweat = kinked, dulled chains.

  • No 24/7 wear for plated pieces. Rotation is preservation — even two pieces alternated last far longer than one worn constantly.

A Last Bit of Perspective

None of this needs to be precious or fussy. Five habits — spray before wearing, wipe after, store sealed, clean gently, rotate favourites — and the pieces you love will look loved instead of worn out, for years. Jewellery that's cared for becomes jewellery with history: the earrings from your wedding season, the ring he finally chose right. That's the whole point.
